Context

Wetlands, essential allies in the fight against climate change

All major policies of the European Union (EU) recognize the key role of wetlands in achieving the EU's goals for climate neutrality, biodiversity protection, zero pollution, flood protection, and circular economy. Therefore, assessing the extent and current state of European wetlands, their current and potential greenhouse gas (GHG) profile, and their medium- and long-term mitigation capacity through restoration or other measures are essential priorities for the European Union in combating climate change.

It was necessary to measure the effects of restorations on climate and natural services and to identify funding and sustainable solutions for wetlands.

An impact analysis to better value ecosystem services

The main mission of the project was to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and habitat degradation for sustainable management of European wetlands.

Vertigo Lab analyzed the impacts of restorations on carbon and greenhouse gas emissions, then tested assessment methods in pilot areas across Europe.

The project involved a multidisciplinary consortium of 15 European partners, including our team from Vertigo Lab, which coordinated the working group and the consortium dedicated to evaluating socio-economic, ecological, and ecosystem services and co-benefits of wetland restoration.

The RESTORE4Cs project aimed to provide data and recommendations to guide European policies and local strategies in favor of wetland restoration.

BENEFITS

Through an integrative approach, it identified the effect of restoration actions on carbon storage and GHG balances, the socio-economic value of generated co-benefits, the potential of existing funding tools to stimulate investments, and the social acceptability of restoration and management practices.
