Climate change and the massive extinction of biodiversity are pushing to question the norms and standards of urban planning. In this context, the implementation of “green” infrastructures (e.g. green walls and roofs, grassed pavements, urban micro-forests, etc.) is increasingly popular. This type of infrastructure, although offering ecological, economic and social benefits, calls into question the management and development of urban spaces as well as the engineering and technical skills required for their implementation and maintenance. In opposition, “grey” infrastructures (from traditional engineering) lifespans are already known but they remain strongly inflexible.

In order to guide urban development project leaders, the Union Nationale des Entreprises du Paysage (UNEP) wished to carry out a study aimed at analysing and quantifying the advantages and disadvantages of green infrastructure compared to grey infrastructure. This study is divided into four phases:

  1. Defining solutions and indicators to compare these two types of infrastructure;
  2. Carry out a comparative analysis of the solutions for three scenarios;
  3. Produce a comparative decision support tool;
  4. Prepare a communication document.

Vertigo Lab will use its expertise on the valuation of ecosystem services to identify and estimate the costs and benefits associated with green infrastructure, and will thus contribute to the first three phases of the project.
