Context

The development potential of the blue economy in French Guiana

Located at the heart of an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and traversed by several rivers, French Guiana is rich in resources that can be leveraged to sustainably develop its economy.

The various existing or emerging sectors in French Guiana that depend on these resources represent a central potential for economic development in the region. These sectors are part of the blue economy as defined by the European Commission: "the totality of economic activities related to oceans, seas, and coasts, including direct and indirect supporting activities necessary for its functioning."

Aware and eager to activate this development potential, the Territorial Collectivity of Guyana (CTG) sought to deepen its understanding of the local blue economy and its growth potential.

A comprehensive diagnosis to inform territorial decisions

To this end, the CTG commissioned Vertigo Lab to conduct a study on the blue economy in French Guiana. Based on an extensive literature review and numerous interviews with local stakeholders, a preliminary diagnosis was carried out to assess the economic and social weight of the blue economy in the territory and to identify development potentials by sector.

Subsequently, these initial observations were presented to all stakeholders in the blue economy of French Guiana during the organization of the first Blue Economy Conference.

This diagnosis then served as the basis for developing strategic guidelines to make the blue economy a driver of socio-economic development.

BENEFITS

Consolidated results to structure a long-term strategy

Following the Blue Economy Conference in French Guiana, the study was finalized and submitted to the CTG. The blue economy in French Guiana (including tourism) thus represents nearly 200 million euros in revenue and more than 1 300 jobs spread across 492 establishments.

The transport sector is the largest contributor in terms of production and added value. In terms of jobs, it is the fishing sector that supports the blue economy the most.

The consolidated results have been presented in the form of a synthetic infographic illustrating the main findings and observations, available below.
