Support for the prefiguration of a payment for environmental services (PES) system in the Seine basin
Context
Structuring a system to reconcile sustainable agriculture and water quality
AgriParisSeine is a territorial cooperation consortium aimed at supporting the Nourishing Seine Project, which is backed by the Bank of Territories.
The need was for a study aimed at structuring sustainable agricultural and food sectors in the Seine basin. It focused on creating a system that protects water resources while promoting sustainable sectors, as well as supporting partners to co-construct a common territorial system.
Indeed, the Seine Basin area is facing a major environmental challenge regarding water resources, which are experiencing significant rates of diffuse pollution (pesticides, nitrates), as well as an agricultural challenge that combines fair compensation for producers, resource protection, and the development of sustainable sectors.
service
A multi-stakeholder co-construction to design a PES system
Vertigo Lab has identified and analyzed socio-economic mechanisms that promote agricultural practices preserving water resource quality, and then organized multi-stakeholder working sessions to co-construct the PES mechanism.
BENEFITS
An operational framework to deploy an environmental system
The mission defined the framework for the PES, including objectives, targets, and human and financial resources, as well as constructing an action sheet for the prefiguration of the system. It also allowed for the development of monitoring and evaluation indicators, as well as providing support for seeking co-financing.
The + Vertigo Lab
Experience and theoretical and practical expertise in PES were mobilized, with facilitation of partnership reflections and co-construction working sessions.
