Design of educational materials on the assessment of Nature-based Solutions
Context
Mediterranean challenges and the need to assess Nature-Based Solutions
How can the adoption of Nature-Based Solutions be integrated into decision-making processes and operationalized for implementation? How can the socio-economic benefits of NbS be assessed to encourage their dissemination in the Mediterranean basin?
The approach to addressing these questions was designed, implemented, and capitalized on during the two years of the project funded by the MAVA Foundation in the Mediterranean. The project's objective was to reduce the impact of water extraction and coastal development on critical wetland areas in the Mediterranean. This project aimed to share knowledge, particularly about the dynamics of these environments and their link to ecosystem services.

Training, equipping, and sharing: educational levers for NbS
Vertigo Lab worked with Birdlife International to improve the operationality of the assessment of ecosystem services related to water, coastal features, and climate change. The connection of these services with the concept of Nature-Based Solutions was also studied.
Alongside partners, we benefited from the support of the MAVA Foundation to carry out several missions aimed at making knowledge about NbS more concrete and tangible for decision-makers and investors in the Mediterranean.
We conducted:
- A review of TESSA (Toolkit for Ecosystem Service Site-based Assessment) with modules on ecosystem services.
- Support for conservation professionals on the assessment of these services, NbS, and cost-benefit analyses.
- The establishment of guidelines to draw lessons and advocate for the economic opportunity of NbS and a ready-to-use methodology for their economic assessment.
Furthermore, sustainable economic models specific to enhancing the targeted ecosystem services and mechanisms for the project's long-term financing have been implemented.
BENEFITS
Towards a shared culture of Nature-Based Solutions
We ensured the capacity of local partners to efficiently and effectively implement Nature-Based Solutions, to monitor their socio-economic and environmental benefits, with the aim of contributing to integrated management of Mediterranean coastal areas through the provision of better quality ecosystem services.
The project allowed for the development of an argumentation and a decision-support toolkit for policymakers, public and private investors to better assess ecosystem services; conduct a cost-benefit analysis; and demonstrate the economic opportunity of NbS. Find the produced documents below.
In parallel, a series of webinars was organized in collaboration with partners. Their aim was to share field experience in assessment and encourage a wide diversity of stakeholders to assess NbS to support their implementation.
