Assessment of the sustainability of a hybrid renewable energy production system
Context
Develop hybrid systems for integrated renewable energy
The HY4RES project aims to develop hybridization solutions for renewable energy production, integrating technologies such as hydropower, photovoltaic solar, wind, biomass, and gravitational storage at the same site for the same user.
Co-financed by the European Interreg Atlantic Area program, the project will help establish sustainable and low-cost energy production systems for the agricultural, aquaculture, industrial sectors, and energy communities.
The hybridization of energy sources is driven by various digital tools for optimized sizing, production prediction, and energy consumption.

Four pilot sites to test hybrid solutions in real conditions
Integrated into a European consortium of researchers and engineers, Vertigo Lab has been responsible for the holistic assessment of the sustainability of these systems. This assessment included a study of socio-economic, environmental, and societal impacts. These various impacts have been analyzed both independently and jointly to better understand their sustainability within a given political-regulatory context.
The project deploys four pilot sites in the Atlantic area — in Spain, Portugal, Ireland, and France — testing combinations of hybrid technologies (solar, wind, hydropower, biomass, storage). Innovative digital tools, including "fish-friendly" turbines and machine learning energy prediction models, are being developed to optimize local production and consumption.
BENEFITS
Evaluate the overall sustainability of hybrid systems
On this project, Vertigo Lab mobilized all its evaluation expertise to assess the degree of sustainability of such projects. Indeed, throughout the entire life cycle of the pilots, we mobilized our expertise in evaluating territorial socio-economic impacts through our ImpacTer tool, used extensive environmental data such as Exiobase to assess upstream environmental impacts, and integrated an analysis of the state of nature in the impact areas.
We developed our evaluation methodologies to cover the societal spectrum and analyzed public policies that accelerate or hinder the development of such solutions in the states as well as within the European community.
The project is thus anchored in a logic of monitoring and evaluating the impacts of public policies of the European Commission, concerned with sustainable development in its territories.
