Evaluation des services écosystémiques de la Narse de Nouvialle
Context
Understanding the ecological and heritage value of the Narse de Nouvialle
The Planèze of Saint-Flour, a vast basalt plateau, is one of the remarkable entities of the Cantal department, located within the Saint-Flour Community. The Narse de Nouvialle, the largest wetland in the Planèze, is a collection of wet and marshy meadows covering an area of 397 hectares and at an altitude of 1150 meters, extending across 3 municipalities: Roffiac, Valuéjols, and Tanavelle. It presents numerous interests in terms of heritage, as well as functional, landscape, geological, and educational aspects.
The community of municipalities aimed to strengthen the preservation of the ecosystems of the Narse de Nouvialle while encouraging sustainable management of natural resources, benefiting local communities.

A comprehensive assessment of ecosystem services and their benefits
This study of Vertigo Lab aimed to assess the services and benefits that the ecosystems of the Narse de Nouvialle provide from a socio-economic perspective.
Our analysis revealed the major role of the Narse as a reservoir of biodiversity, a source of cultural services, and a key area for ecological regulation, reinforcing the need to preserve this unique space.
The ecosystem services approach was used to describe, quantify, and even monetize the well-being provided by the Narse to local residents. The socio-economic assessment of these services linked natural ecosystems to their ecological functions and the human activities that depend on them. A scenario of enhanced protection measures for the Narse by 2050 was studied.
BENEFITS
Strong arguments for protecting and enhancing the Narse
The results partially presented below provided an objective basis to guide management choices for the community of municipalities, strengthen the conservation of the wetland, and enhance its role within the territory.
