Study on Sustainable Financing for Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean
Context
Strengthening sustainable financing for marine protected areas in the Mediterranean
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are recognized as one of the most effective strategic tools for ensuring marine conservation.
Despite increasing efforts to expand their scope, many of them lack sufficient resources to achieve their conservation objectives.
Without a solid economic model, protection remains theoretical. The challenge is clear: to secure sustainable financing for marine protected areas in the Mediterranean.
service
Conduct a study on the financial needs of Mediterranean MPAs
In 2014, the association of marine protected area managers (MedPAN), the Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (CAR/SPA) and WWF Mediterranean launched a project aimed at better understanding the financial needs of Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas and supporting managers and competent authorities in developing sustainable financing mechanisms for their MPAs.
Vertigo Lab was commissioned to carry out this work which led to:
- The publication of a study on the financial needs of Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas;
- The development of a guide for MPA managers on seeking sustainable funding;
- The organization of a training workshop on sustainable financing of MPAs, held from 10 to 21 October 2015 in Calvi.
BENEFITS
Support the creation of sustainable mechanisms for MPAs
The results of this work have notably contributed to the development of the status of Mediterranean MPAs 2016 as well as discussions around the creation of a trust fund for financing marine protected areas in the Mediterranean.
The study has thus contributed to structuring the debates and strengthening the financial viability of MPAs at the regional level.
