Study on the potential for economic diversification in New Caledonia
Context
Identifying sustainable economic alternatives and supporting the ecological transition of New Caledonia.
In a context of health, economic, and ecological crises, it seemed appropriate to engage in reflection on economic diversification for New Caledonia to reduce the pressures on its natural capital and make the economy and society more resilient.
Analyzing promising sectors in New Caledonia
This project was funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), along with WWF and ADEME.
The economy of New Caledonia heavily relies on non-renewable resources (especially mining), which raises questions for the future.
Our study consisted of:
- Analyzing the economic, social, and environmental situation of the territory;
- Identifying more sustainable alternative economic sectors;
- Building a roadmap with local stakeholders to evolve the economy.

sustainable fisheries resource management, sustainable forestry, renewable energies, sustainable tourism, and sustainable valorization of natural substances (emerging sector).
and the construction of a prospective scenario for ecological transition by 2040 will lead to concrete actions to be taken and sectoral objectives to be achieved to engage in strong sustainability diversification.
BENEFITS
The impacts of this scenario will be quantified using indicators, notably socio-economic (e.g., jobs, production), to highlight the potential of New Caledonia in this approach.
