Etude d’impact de la conchyliculture en Charente-Maritime
Context
Understanding the socio-economic stakes of shellfish farming in Charente-Maritime
Shellfish farming is one of the major traditional fishing activities in Charente-Maritime. The sector faces increasing anthropogenic pressures on the coastline that hinder the necessary conditions for its maintenance, let alone its development.
To address these challenges, the sector must demonstrate its importance and strengthen its local acceptability, particularly with public organizations. To this end, the Regional Committee for Shellfish Farming (CRC 17) has decided to conduct a socio-economic study on the sector to inform public decisions regarding the contributions and socio-environmental-economic stakes of shellfish farming.
The Regional Shellfish Committee is a recognized Professional Public Law Organization (ODP). It supports, defends, represents, communicates, and promotes the shellfish farming profession.

A cross-methodology between economics and maritime capital
Vertigo Lab has developed a methodology that allowed us to combine our economic approach with that of the maritime capital of the Sea and Coastal Strategy (SML).
We conducted an economic and territorial diagnosis with various interviews with shellfish farmers and different stakeholders involved in managing the sector; the realization of a feasibility study on the relevance and objectives of public action; and the development of an action plan on partnerships and communication methods to change the image of the sector.
BENEFITS
Action levers to strengthen the shellfish sector
The study proposed an action plan to the CRC of Charente-Maritime to strengthen and support its action in the territory. This action plan consists of four main axes built around the sector's key issues:
- Its attractiveness and valorization;
- Its monitoring through structured data;
- Its role in environmental protection;
- Its place in the governance and economy of the territory.
These recommendations contribute to repositioning shellfish farming as an essential activity for the economic, social, and ecological vitality of the Charente coastline.
