Study on the resilience of coastal territories in French Polynesia
Context
Develop and operationalize tools to assist in the ecological rehabilitation of degraded sites
The regional RESCCUE project (Resilience of Ecosystems and Societies to Climate Change), coordinated by the Pacific Community, aims to increase the resilience of Pacific island countries and territories to global changes through the implementation of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM).
To support Pacific countries, the RESCCUE project specifically aimed to improve the use of the "toolbox" of economic analysis by decision-makers and managers, a "toolbox" that is poorly or not deployed in the Pacific.
In French Polynesia, the project was implemented, under the dual oversight of the CPS and the Government of French Polynesia, by the French Agency for Biodiversity (AFB) in partnership with IRCP-EPHE, the University of French Polynesia, Créocéan, GIE Océanide, PTPU, Vertigo Lab, the SOP Manu association, and several individual consultants.

Providing technical and economic support for sustainable practices
In partnership with Biotope and BRGM, we carried out 3 projects for the RECORD association, which is a network of applied research bringing together industrial companies, public actors, and research organizations. Our work consisted of:
- Laying the methodological foundations (measuring biodiversity and ecosystem services);
- Concrete evaluation of rehabilitation operations (development of a tool integrating the framework of Nature-based Solutions);
- Moving to operational (testing, adjusting, and validating the tool on real cases with industries and local authorities).
These projects benefit a range of land management stakeholders (companies, local authorities, consulting firms).
- Technical and economic support for sustainable agricultural practices and proposals for actions against erosion on pineapple plots and access paths (planting vetiver strips on a pilot plot and creating technical-economic sheets for professionals in the sector, among others).
- Supporting a more sustainable pearl farming: analysis of the socio-economic impacts of pearl farming in the Gambier Islands, analysis of solutions for the valorization of certain macro-plastic waste.
- Feasibility studies for financing mechanisms for sustainable practices (including labeling) and proposals regarding taxation.
BENEFITS
Producing decision-making tools for the resilience of territories
All project results and deliverables are available in the summary note presented below.
The deliverables produced by Vertigo Lab provided Polynesian managers with concrete tools to integrate environmental economics into their decisions, support local sectors, and strengthen the resilience of coastal territories to climate change.
The + Vertigo Lab
Our economic analyses support agricultural and marine transitions in island territories particularly exposed to the effects of climate change.
