Understanding the role of marine and coastal ecosystems
It was necessary for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States to better understand and take into account biological resources for their crucial role in supporting human life, habitats, and their development in Antigua and Barbuda.
The organization aimed to promote the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, particularly regarding the capacity of communities to improve their sustainable management of coastal and marine resources.

A comprehensive methodology tailored to the Caribbean
Vertigo Lab and Créocéan assessed key marine and coastal ecosystem services in Antigua and Barbuda. We conducted several parallel activities: an economic assessment at two sites: North East Marine Management Area (NEMMA) and Boggy Peak National Park (BPNP); training of identified local partners on economic assessment methods; producing a manual on economic assessment methods; and developing guidelines for applying economic assessment methods to other ecosystems.

Outcomes for Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean region
The expected results of this mission provided Antigua and Barbuda with solid economic data on its marine and coastal ecosystems, trained a network of local partners capable of conducting their own assessments, and provided transferable tools (manual + guidelines) to expand the approach to other ecosystems in the Caribbean Sea.
Thus, the project combines knowledge production, strengthening local capacities, and strategic support for decision-makers for sustainable and integrated management of marine and coastal resources.
