Context
Measuring the socio-economic impacts of slaughterhouses on rural areas
Interbev has been the interprofessional organization for stakeholders in the cattle and meat sector. In a context of weakening the network of local slaughterhouses, Interbev Grand Est aimed to objectively assess the role of service slaughterhouses in the economic and territorial dynamics of its region. It was necessary to better direct its financial support, find a balance between economic efficiency and territorial balance, and thus make the sector more resilient and sustainable. It was important to measure and value the socio-economic footprint of these slaughterhouses.

A comprehensive analysis of the impacts and cascading effects
Vertigo Lab has quantified the socio-economic impacts of several slaughterhouses within their area, integrating the entire value chain, from upstream to downstream. A simplified calculator has been developed to estimate these impacts operationally. In parallel, an analysis of catalytic effects has been conducted to highlight the positive impacts on agricultural sectors and territorial dynamics.
In terms of methodology and tools, we have:
- Mobilized our internal tool ImpacTer for socio-economic impacts;
- Designed an impact pathway and a consequence tree for qualifying causal chains;
- Conducted interviews to characterize the effects of slaughterhouses on their environment and measure their contribution to territorial development for the evaluation of catalytic impacts;
- Developed a rationale and advocacy to help the sector communicate on the socio-economic issues of closures and/or the creation of new slaughterhouses.

Figures to objectify, a narrative to convince
The mission highlighted the structuring and strategic role of slaughterhouses in rural areas, while shedding light on their ripple effects on livestock, local employment, and downstream sectors. It also provided concrete and quantified elements to enrich discussions with institutional partners.

A simplified calculator tailored to the specificities of the livestock sector was developed, capable of transforming a complex analysis into a clear and mobilizing narrative.
