Etude d’impact d’opérations de réhabilitation écologique des sols dégradés en milieux urbains
Context
Develop and operationalize tools to assist in the ecological rehabilitation of degraded sites
In France, over 6 800 polluted or potentially polluted sites and soils are located in urban or peri-urban areas. In this context, several institutional texts, and more recently the national commitment to a goal of zero net artificialization as part of the biodiversity plan, have emerged. It is necessary to rethink the construction of cities by encouraging the reclamation of these neglected spaces.
In France, the availability of data and tools on ecological rehabilitation and decontamination experiences is very limited. RECORD is a collective applied research program bringing together companies (often industrial), public actors, and research organizations. The RECORD network, with the support of ADEME, has sought to learn more.

Design a method and tool to guide ecological rehabilitation
Vertigo Lab proposed a conceptual and methodological approach to guide a project for the redevelopment of degraded or even polluted sites towards a reduction of the artificialization of urban ecosystems. We have also designed a tool to monitor, through indicators, the restoration of the functioning of these urban ecosystems and the associated ecosystem services.
The use of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) has been one of the preferred methodological approaches. This approach allows the project holder to integrate a greater proportion of rehabilitated natural spaces contributing to the well-being of residents and to the mitigation of climate change. It also suggests relying on natural ecosystems and their ecological functions to accelerate the recovery of a self-sustaining ecosystem.
BENEFITS
Enhanced monitoring for urban development projects
The study was co-constructed with the industrial members of the RECORD association who carry out redevelopment projects in urban areas, in order to understand their expectations and needs, and to design a tool suited to their uses.
The tool we have designed provides access to a list of NbS that can ideally replace highly impactful conventional solutions. This tool also offers indicators for monitoring the functions and ecosystem services that allow measuring the success of on-site rehabilitation.
The + Vertigo Lab
Vertigo Lab mobilized its expertise in environmental assessment and nature economics to design decision-support tools promoting the ecological restoration of degraded urban soils.
