Choosing sustainable urban infrastructures: analysis and trade-offs

This project was carried out for the National Union of Landscape Companies (UNEP), for the benefit of its members and urban planning stakeholders.

In contrast, "gray" infrastructures (derived from traditional engineering) generally have a clear lifespan and return on investment but remain inflexible.

A study to differentiate, compare, and decide

service

To guide urban development project leaders, the National Union of Landscape Companies (UNEP) wanted to conduct a study aimed at analyzing and quantifying the advantages and disadvantages of green infrastructures compared to gray infrastructures.

Vertigo Lab leveraged its expertise in valuing ecosystem services to identify and estimate the costs and benefits associated with green infrastructures.

This study was divided into four phases: defining solutions and indicators to compare these two types of infrastructures; conducting a comparative analysis of solutions for three scenarios; creating a comparative decision-making tool; preparing a communication document.

Towards more sustainable urban engineering

BENEFITS

By combining classical engineering approaches and ecosystem service economics, this study highlighted the multiple benefits of green infrastructures while objectively assessing their costs and technical constraints.

The results contributed to enhancing the consideration of nature-based solutions in planning policies and promoting a transition towards more resilient and vibrant cities.

We combine ecological expertise and economic rigor to aid decision-making and build more sustainable urban models.
