Comparative study of green infrastructures versus gray infrastructures
Context
Green vs. Gray Infrastructures: Changing Perspectives on Development
The National Union of Landscape Companies represents landscape businesses in France: design, creation, and maintenance of green spaces, gardens, and outdoor developments. It brings together key players in urban nature and the management of green spaces.
It is also a lever for structuring the sector. By supporting its members on issues of biodiversity, climate, and transition, UNEP contributes to professionalizing practices and positioning the sector as an essential player in sustainable territories.
UNEP wanted to conduct a study to analyze and quantify the advantages and disadvantages of green infrastructures compared to gray infrastructures, then communicate the results and provide project leaders with a comparative decision-making tool.
service
Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of development solutions, and compare
The main objective of this service was to compare several project variants based on their proportion of green and gray infrastructures, evaluating the advantages/disadvantages and benefits at all levels.
In collaboration with a group of landscape architects, lawyers, and ecologists, Vertigo Lab primarily focused on defining socio-economic indicators.
In this capacity, Vertigo Lab participated in building the conceptual and methodological framework of the study.
BENEFITS
Build an analysis framework and a decision-making support tool
Thanks to its experience in the economic evaluation of nature-based solutions (NbS), Vertigo Lab contributed its knowledge of national and international networks related to NbS as well as its experience in developing typologies for analyzing different levels of NbS.
Vertigo Lab also provided its expert insight on each of the three scenarios and during the construction of the tool, to facilitate the communication of results and provide project leaders with a comparative decision-making tool.
