Context

Revealing the value of the protected sites of the Conservatoire du littoral

On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the Conservatoire du littoral wanted to highlight the economic value of the sites under its protection.

The study focused on 8 exceptional natural ecosystems: the Arcachon basin, southern Finistère, the Thau lagoon, the Maures coast, southern Corsica, the Orne estuary, the Somme bay, and the Charente estuary; in order to assess the goods and services they provide.

Measuring the economic benefits of protection

The analysis demonstrated the significant contribution of the Conservatoire's sites to the economy of the territories.

It highlights the economic benefits generated by a long-term protection policy, valuing the ecosystem services provided by these natural environments.

These results offer an economic perspective on coastal protection, often perceived solely from an environmental standpoint.

BENEFITS

Guiding protection policies towards 2050

The study was conducted with a forward-looking perspective, providing recommendations to continue and strengthen coastal protection efforts.

It also aimed to guide the management of the sites to maximize their contribution to the coastal economy. At the national level, the benefits of protecting the sites of the Conservatoire du littoral are estimated at nearly 240 million euros per year. Cultural services represent the largest share of this value (56 %), followed by regulatory services (27 %).

Six case studies were produced for the Bay of Somme, the Orne estuary, South Finistère, the Leyre delta – Arcachon basin, the Thau lagoon, and the Maures coastline.
