Development of a climate change adaptation strategy for the clothing company Petit Bateau
Context
Anticipating climate change in the clothing industry
A historically integrated company based in Troyes, Petit Bateau controls a large part of its value chain and bases its model on cotton, which represents 90% of its products, mostly certified GOTS.
This dependence makes it a critical raw material. However, climate change (droughts, floods, extreme heat) threatens the availability, quality, and cost of cotton, generating operational, financial, regulatory, and reputational risks.
In light of these challenges, the company has initiated an adaptation strategy aimed at securing and diversifying its supply sources, strengthening the resilience of its supply chain, and maintaining its CSR requirements as well as its premium positioning by 2040–2050.
service
Modeling climate risks in the cotton supply chain
Vertigo Lab proposed an adaptation strategy to Petit Bateau that relies on agro-climatic modeling by 2040–2050. This approach combines the analysis of yields, water stress, extreme weather events, and fiber quality, while integrating social and economic risks according to production areas. It will allow the brand to objectively assess the vulnerabilities of the cotton supply chain from a long-term perspective. The analysis will identify and compare current and emerging production basins, incorporating scenarios of price volatility and changes in certifications.
The deliverables provided include multi-criteria maps and analyses, as well as sourcing recommendations specifying areas to prioritize, secure, or avoid. We produced an operational roadmap for the company to build a resilient, diversified cotton supply chain aligned with climate and market challenges.
