Context

Towards the optimization of a MPA at the scale of the Polynesian EEZ

In response to the challenges facing the preservation of its exceptional natural riches, a process of consultation has been initiated to implement integrated management of its marine spaces.

The creation of a marine protected area (MPA) covering the entire marine space of French Polynesia is considered one of the possible responses to the development of a territorial strategy for sustainable management of the ecosystems of the Polynesian maritime space.

This mission aims to conduct a state of play and a critical analysis, in light of the Polynesian context, of the management systems of marine protected areas in place outside of French Polynesia with a view to classifying the entire maritime space of Polynesia.

service

Analyzing management models of large marine protected areas

As part of this mission, Vertigo Lab conducted a three-level analysis of the management challenges of MPAs:

  • A global analysis of the scientific, political, and legal context in which marine protected areas operate to highlight the challenges and objectives these tools must address;
  • A critical analysis of a sample of large MPAs to specify the factors of failure and success in their creation and subsequent management;
  • A comparative analysis of the governance context of French Polynesia with those of countries that have created large MPAs in order to formulate recommendations, orientations, and propose management tools adapted to the Polynesian context.

BENEFITS

Proposing orientations adapted to the Polynesian context

The analysis provides recommendations and strategic orientations to support the implementation of integrated management of Polynesian marine spaces.

By relying on international experiences and a detailed understanding of the local context, the study contributes to structuring an approach tailored to the ecological, political, and legal challenges specific to French Polynesia.

It thus serves as a solid foundation to strengthen the coherence and effectiveness of a marine protected area covering the entire Polynesian EEZ.
