Study of food flows and the potential for relocalization in the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg
Context
Understanding food flows to relocalize in the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg
The Eurometropolis of Strasbourg, with over 30 municipalities and 500 000 inhabitants, constitutes a major consumption basin. As part of its Territorial Food Project, it aimed to strengthen its food system by building on work already undertaken in several sectors: legumes, wheat-flour-bread, grass-fed meat, fruits, and vegetables.
The challenge today is to go further: to better understand food flows, the dependencies of the territory, and the levers for relocalization.
The Eurometropolis needed to understand the functioning of its food system through a precise analysis of flows (production, processing, distribution, consumption); identify the potentials for relocalization by sector and by link; define priority actions for relocalizing the sectors; mobilize public and private actors as well as citizens; and rethink the food planning of the territory (governance, cooperation, and infrastructure).
service
Analyze the food system and its dependencies
Led by Vertigo Lab and Let's Food, the mission is organized into 2 complementary phases.
A first diagnostic phase allowed for the structuring of a database, mapping of actors and infrastructures, analyzing food flows, both physical and monetary, and assessing food autonomy using a resilience calculator. This work was enriched by a census of existing initiatives and a multi-actor validation workshop.
A second phase aims to transform the diagnosis into action by analyzing the levers of reterritorialization for several priority sectors and modeling the socio-economic impacts of scenarios using our ImpacTer tool and a resilience calculator.
BENEFITS
Moving from food flow data to public action
The ongoing mission should result in a concrete roadmap for relocalizing food. We need to produce prioritized recommendations, action sheets, including for citizen mobilization, and operational deliverables.
The + Vertigo Lab
Expertise in food flow analysis, territorial modeling, and multi-actor co-construction for the benefit of an eurometropolis.
