Context
Towards sustainable water management in French agriculture
As part of its 2020-2025 strategy, WWF-France has made freshwater one of its conservation and transition priorities. Its mission is to protect freshwater ecosystems and promote the fair use of water resources.
WWF has sought support to analyze the importance and impacts of irrigated corn in French and European agriculture, particularly in terms of water consumption, and to examine the potential for new crops that promote water-efficient agriculture and resilience to climate change.

An in-depth study to rethink the water needs of crops
Vertigo Lab conducted an analysis of the water needs of corn and less water-intensive alternative crops, then assessed the socio-economic impacts of the relevant alternative sectors from the perspective of food sovereignty.
We have also analyzed water resources in an international context. Concrete deliverables have been produced with recommendations for sustainable agriculture.

The study provided a clear vision of the consumption and water footprint of French agriculture and identified more resilient crops to enhance food sovereignty.
The + Vertigo Lab
A methodology was developed to evaluate water consumption and extraction, utilizing specific databases related to water and agriculture, as well as aggregation models and calculations, while relying on technical and scientific partners.
